Directors notes from Zita:
We acknowledge that Lookup Theatre's Mental Health Social Circus Troupe meets on the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat. We would also like to acknowledge that you are joining us from many places near and far and would like to acknowledge the traditional caretakers of those lands but recorded and unrecorded.
I have had the immense pleasure of working with Lookup Theatre's Mental Health Social Circus Troupe in a variety of capacities over the past several years. So when Angola approached me about directing the 2020 show I of course said yes. We were well on our way to devisining our live show when the world shut down in March.
At the start of these quaren-times we put the show to the side but continued our weekly meetings online. Not only did we become experts at Zoom dance parties, but we quickly discovered that our weekly meetings boosted our mental health and morale. We were physically distant but united as a community.
This troupe loves performing. They love creating. They love sharing their movement metaphors on mental health with an audience. It wasn't long before our weekly check-ins shifted back to rehearsals for a show. A show that looks different from anything that the troupe has ever created. Covisions is a reflection and response to the current moment. It is a window into how the troupe sees (and feels and embodies) the uncertain, the frustrating, the ridiculous and bizarre nature of this time. Without further ado, I would like to welcome you into the world of Covisions.
From our social support worker Sandy:
For the cast of Covisions, art has been an incredibly powerful and useful wellness tool. Especially now during this time of global pandemic and physical distrancing, having the weekly rehearsal allowed this group to work together creatively and maintain the cohesive community that they've built over the years.
Through art,the Covisions cast has been able to explore themes around mental health and wellness, as well as continue to cultivate spaces of imagination, wonder and joy to continue to bring beauty into the world with their art.
From our artistic director Angola:
